Little did Big Brother Mike know when met his six-year-old Little Brother Dante that he would have so much fun getting to know Dante and his family. Mike noticed that Dante was a very smart and mature child who had grown up quickly. When speaking with Dante’s mother, Mike learned that he had never had any positive, steady or consistent male role models in his life.. At this point, Mike stated, “I felt a big responsibility to be a good example and role model to him.” During their first outings, Big Brother Mike noticed how Little Brother Dante’s trust issues were evident, as at the end of the day Dante would want confirmation that he would see him again. However, Mike said, “Gradually, those issues faded away as I tried not to break plans and tried to remain consistent with our meetings and activities.”

The relationship is now 10-years strong and their bond couldn’t be greater. Through the years, Big Brother Mike and Little Brother Dante have enjoyed many activities such as hiking, skateboarding, going to the movies, playing video games and going to soccer games. Dante has developed a strong passion for soccer and is on a competitive team. Mike attends as many games as he can to support his Little Brother. Aside from being active, they have always been able to talk about anything. Little Brother Dante will ask his Big Brother for advice on issues or problems that arise so they can discuss solutions. “During the tough times, Mike gives me good advice to get through, whether it’s school or other matters,” stated Little Brother Dante.

Mike has always encouraged Dante to do well academically and to attend college. Even in times of pressure from those around him, Little Brother Dante has taken what his Big Brother has instilled in him to rise above any influences and strive to stay on the right track. He is currently an honors student and is starting to look into what his future holds for him in college. Dante’s mother couldn’t be more proud of the success her son has seen and will continue to see thanks to the guidance of Big Brother Mike.

Big Sister Deb became a Big for several reasons. The main reason was that it was an inherent dream to somehow affect this world we live in for the better, even if it was to make one person’s life, one animal’s life, or one family’s life a little better, a little easier. She always felt an obligation to give back to her community, as it was instilled in her by her dad to always give what and when you can. When Deb met her Little Sister, Jenny, she had just experienced a transition from living with her birth parents to staying with a foster family, then moving in her aunt in a span of one year. “I was emotional, confused and unquestionably difficult,” Little Sister Jenny stated.

Big Sister Deb took on her new Little Sister with excitement and was determined to make an impact on Jenny. When they first met, Little Sister Jenny was shy and quiet. Big Sister Deb encouraged her Little Sister to come out of her shell by teaching her to look people in the eye when people were speaking with her, to use manners, to hold her head up high and to say what she needed to say clearly. Deb’s open and honest personality would soon spill over to Jenny by making her aware that she is loved and valued by those around her.

In their eight years together, they have shared many adventures including baseball games, Blue Man Group concert, duck boat tours, visits to the aquarium and many delicious meals. Above all the adventures they have experienced, Little Sister Jenny understands that it’s more than the fun times they spend together, “it’s all the little lessons she has given me to store in my pocket and carry with me for the rest of my life.” Their long car drives are amongst their favorite time together, as that’s where they talk and laugh the most. Through this foundation of trust, Big Sister Deb has been there when her Little Sister has needed her.

The pressures of being a teenager are sometimes difficult for Little Sister Jenny to handle, but thanks to her Big Sister, she is able to look past this pressure. “I really don’t know what I’d do without her,” said Jenny. She now believes that she can lean on Deb through the best and worst of times. The feeling is mutual for her Big Sister. Deb describes her Little Sister as “my sunshine on a cloudy day.” Everyone around them knows that Wednesday is their day to spend time together. “I went into the program believing that I would be the one doing all the giving – not knowing how much I would receive in return. I know in my heart that Jenny and I will always be friends and she knows without a doubt that I will always be here. We don’t always see eye-to-eye, but we always see heart-to-heart.”

Little Brother Trinity lives with his grandmother, who saw a dire need for her grandson to have a positive role model and someone who could help bring stability to his life. Trinity had been through much hurt and disappointment in his life, and his grandmother wanted her grandson to rise above all the challenges he faced. In 2011, Trinity would be matched with his Big Brother Mittar. Having a clear understanding of the struggles that Trinity had already experienced, Big Brother Mittar listened to everything his Little Brother had to share without judgment, and helped him see the brighter side to a situation. As their match progressed, Big Brother Mittar made sure he was consistent in scheduling activities every couple of weeks and stayed in contact between the outings to ensure that Trinity knew he was still on his mind. Big Brother Mittar stated, “One of my initial long-term goals with Trinity was to redefine what he saw as possible in his life, career, lifestyle, relationships and social interactions.” Through this goal, he would instill his own personal experiences into much of what he taught his Little Brother.

Another area in which Big Brother Mittar put much emphasis on was Trinity’s academics. He made sure to take the time so he and Trinity could work on his literacy skills, while still making fun a priority by doing activities such as going to the zoo, playing in the park or visiting the batting cages. Mittar found ways to challenge Trinity’s reading skills by having him read signs, menus, and anything else he could while they were out in the community. All of their hard work paid off when Trinity was able to transition out of a special needs school and into his neighborhood middle school.

The influence that Big Brother Mittar has had on Trinity can be seen not only academically, but also socially and emotionally. Trinity admitted that before he met Mittar, he was prone to fighting and didn’t always trust adults in his life. Trinity now has the confidence necessary to make friends and he even started an anti-bullying campaign at his school. Little Brother Trinity has big aspirations and is interested in joining the Army. Mittar has used that goal as an opportunity to discuss the necessary steps that he must take in order to reach that dream, including doing well in school, training hard, and taking care of his body. Mittar finds ways to lead by example in their relationship and show his Little Brother what it’s like to live a happy, productive and successful life. “When I grow up, graduate, join the military and get married, I want Mittar to be there. He is my friend for life,” stated Little Brother Trinity.

Dejanea is a quiet girl who had limited exposure to life outside of her family, school and neighborhood. Her mother wanted for her daughter to have an opportunity to experience things she couldn’t give her. In June 2012, Little Sister Dejanea would be matched with her Big Sister, Leslie. From the very beginning of their match, Leslie saw how graceful her Little Sister was, regardless of any struggles her family might be going through. Leslie has been instrumental in giving Dejanea a break from any troubles at home. They have built their relationship by going to the movies, going shopping, attending princess camp, spending the afternoon at Joyland Amusement Park, and playing at an indoor ropes course called Adrenaline City.

Big Sister Leslie loves giving back to her community any way she can and has instilled this in her relationship with Little Sister Dejanea. Over the past three years they have volunteered at the American Cancer Society Lubbock Hope Lodge, where Dejanea grew close with one of the residents, Tori. Little Sister Dejanea would take dinners to Tori and loved hanging out with her. Sadly, Tori lost her battle to cancer in January 2014 and this was one of the biggest heartbreaks Little Sister Dejanea experienced. From this tragic event, Leslie and Dejanea started a tradition in Tori’s memory, where they take dinner to the residents at the Hope Lodge once a month. “Being together and giving back has helped us heal from the loss of Tori. I share this story because of the impact it has had on Dejanea and me. I think our relationship has grown stronger,” stated Big Sister Leslie. She also added, “From Tori, Dejanea has learned the importance of education and to never give up.”

Academics has been a very big part of their story. Big Sister Leslie has helped Little Sister Dejanea improve on her grades and is even now enrolled in some Advanced Placement classes, where she has excelled. Dejanea’s mother is very proud of her daughter and is appreciative to Big Sister Leslie in all of the support she has given to Dejanea. “My favorite thing about Leslie is that she is just all around concerned for Dejanea, from school to personal feelings.” Through all the struggles that Dejanea has experienced, she has embraced all of the life lessons and thanks her Big Sister for always being there. “She always treats me like the daughter she never had. That’s why I’m going to treat her like the friend I never had.”

As a seven-year-old, Little Brother Octavio had already experienced much adversity and went through the foster care system. His mom wanted to find someone who would be able to help Octavio overcome the struggles she saw in her son. Octavio was a very shy kid with a fair amount of anxiety over new and changing situations. He had little trust in those around him, and the fear of failure was impacting his ability learn new skills at school. Fortunately, things began to change once Little Brother Octavio met his new Big Brother, Eric, at the Pacific Science Center in 2013. After talking with Octavio, his mother and teachers, Big Brother Eric and Little Brother Octavio set forth three main goals. Their first goal was to complete the Children’s Marathon, where Octavio would have to run 25 miles prior to the event and then the last 1.2 miles at the event. The second and third goals included reading 10 books and to write one book together, as Octavio’s teachers mentioned these were two key areas of development.

They took all three goals as a challenge and focused on them both during and outside of their outings. Little Brother Octavio would work on running during recess, while Big Brother Eric would train first thing in the morning. During every meeting, Eric would work with Octavio on reading for at least 15 minutes. As a way to motivate his Little Brother with their third goal of writing a book, Eric suggested that Octavio sell his book for $1 to friends and family. After five months of working together, they finished their book, which was mostly composed of photos and descriptions of their outings together. Octavio worked on his comfort level and prepared a sales pitch, and it was here that Octavio developed a sense of confidence. “It was really a thrill to witness that ‘aha’ moment for him. ‘I did this!’ He was proud of himself that day,” stated Big Brother Eric.

Not only did they complete their goals, but they are now a big part of their routine. They have completed multiple marathons and written several books, including a fiction book called “Fox and Bird Become Friends.” Octavio’s mother stated, “Eric took Octavio as a treasure in his life without batting an eye and within a year, Octavio had made huge strides in becoming the happy, energetic, gregarious kid he was supposed to be.”

November 17, 2004, is a very special date for Big Sister Molly and Little Sister Hope. This is the date when they first met. Little Sister Hope, having just turned six, was a little ball of energy with a toothless smile and a bright spirit who was excited to meet her new Big Sister. Hope’s life was a cycle of poverty and instability with many moves and school changes, so her mom knew that her daughter needed someone to guide her and help bring stability.

Their match started with swimming, ice-skating and playing basketball, but the relationship has expanded far beyond these weekly activities. One of their favorite times together is when they visit Big Sister Molly’s family at their annual gathering in a small cottage. “Away from school and peers, surrounded instead with activities such as swimming, water-skiing and hiking, Hope transforms into her truest self. She shines,” stated Big Sister Molly.

Big Sister Molly has seen her Little Sister learn to read, write, tell time and ride a bike without training wheels. She has also attended Hope’s fifth-grade graduation, eighth-grade graduation and will soon see her graduate high school in 2017. School has always been a hard endeavor for Hope and with the help from her Big Sister, Hope has a new found passion for writing. Now instead of working on addition and subtraction, Big Sister Molly and Little Sister Hope are taking on issues relating to self-esteem, friendships, boys and the goal of one day becoming a writer.

“I’m thankful every day for Molly and the sacrifices she makes for me and my family. She does every possible thing to help me do well,” said Little Sister Hope. She sees her Big Sister as a real sister, mentor and friend who has inspired her to reach for the stars and to know that nothing is impossible. Her Big Sister stated, “Ten years after that first day, Hope is still a ball of energy with a bright spirit – she’s just a much taller ball of energy whose teeth finally grew in.”

Chris was your typical young boy, except he had already faced many challenges in his short life. After being adopted from Russia, Chris lost his father to cancer. Chris’ mom wanted to help her son cope with the recent loss of his dad. Little Brother Chris would be matched with Big Brother Paul in 2011 through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Adirondacks in New York. Big Brother Paul knew shortly after retiring that he wanted to use his new found free time to volunteer in some way, and thought becoming a mentor would be a great way to give back.

Their initial match meeting happened just before Christmas 2011. Little Brother Chris was ecstatic to have a Big Brother and wanted to plan their first outing right away. They started building their relationship by going bowling, skating, golfing, watching movies and playing in arcades. Paul noticed how open his Little Brother was to him and made it a point to reciprocate the trust. Big Brother Paul stated, “He was always open and honest about his likes and dislikes, and with the help of his incredibly devoted mother, he was always ready on time and excited to get together.” The trust level kept increasing and Chris would call his Big Brother if he had a rough day at school and needed to vent or get advice.

Their activities went from being completely planned to simply coming up with a game plan when they met up, and would often change. Big Brother Paul and Little Brother Chris would often find themselves going on adventures exploring a park or lake they had never been to, or simply skipping stones in the river. During these adventures, Chris would talk about his dad and how much he missed him, but also mentioned to his Big Brother that the time with him sometimes felt like the time he would spend with his dad. “Bigs are in a special position of being able to offer friendship, guidance and support with no emotional baggage and no pressure – a true judgment-free zone,” stated Big Brother Paul.

Paul worked closely with his Little Brother in gaining confidence and understanding that success in life takes discipline and sacrifice. Little Brother Chris has been doing better in school and less prone to frustration and negative self-image. His ticks and anxious habits have decreased and he is better able to handle himself in public. Chris’ mother has been very grateful for Paul’s impact on her son. “We are so glad that Paul and his family are a big part of our life. Chris has grown up because of him.”

After graduating the program with her first Little, Big Sister Esther was looking to continue being a Big Sister and help another child. Esther was matched with Little Sister Donyae, who was a sweet, shy and polite eight-year-old. Little Sister Donyae’s mom saw a need for her daughter to be influenced by someone in the community and give her extra support as she grows up. She also wanted someone who would enjoy being a kid, support Donyae with her interests and talents, and above all, someone who would serve as a trusted friend. From the beginning of their relationship, Big Sister Esther was there for her Little Sister. The two also shared interests in reading, discount shopping, fashion and cheerleading. They reminded each other of the importance of fun, laughter and staying young.

Little Sister Donyae has a passion for the arts and her Big Sister has encouraged and supported her by attending many school plays, concerts and dances. This encouragement has led Little Sister Donyae to find the confidence to do many new things, such as try out for cheerleading and making the squad. Another great example of how Esther has encouraged her Little Sister was when she got glasses and refused to wear them after she got teased by her peers. Esther heard about this and on their next outing, she asked to see Donyae’s glasses. She immediately complimented on how cute they were and how it was a shame that she didn’t want to wear them. Her little sister then got the confidence to start wearing them, so Esther made it a point to compliment her Little on her new glasses in every outing.

As Esther and Donyae nurtured their relationship, car rides became a big part of that growth. “Our quiet car rides on the way to a destination with her sitting in the back have turned into true conversations “Big and Little” sisters have. We talk about friends, family, the ups and downs of life, being friends with the right people, death, wondering why some people say they love us, but never show it, and wondering why we can’t take the pain away and make everything better for those that love us and show us love,” stated Big Sister Esther. She is very proud of her Little Sister and the young lady she is becoming.

Donyae went through a few struggles early on, but her mom has been so grateful for Big Sister Esther in being there for Donyae. Donyae’s mother shared, “Esther has been very supportive and understanding when trying to help Donyae with her goals and struggles as a teenager.” Big Sister Esther’s constant support has certainly made an impact in Little Sister Donyae’s outlook in life and finding the strength to keep moving forward, no matter the struggles.

Big Brother David was looking to give back to his new home of Dayton, Ohio. David signed up to be a Big Brother in 2004 and was matched with Little Brother Griffin. Griffin was a normal six-year-old boy who was very energetic, outspoken and had a great sense of humor. His mom had always been there for him, but she found that Griffin wanted someone to do “guy stuff” with who wasn’t his mom. Griffin wanted someone to teach him about sports, play video games, go on adventures, and build Legos. What Griffin found through his Big Brother was a role model, friend and brother.

Early in their match, Big Brother David brought his new Little Brother to an event that Senator John Kerry was hosting. They had the opportunity to meet the Senator and even take a picture. Shortly after the event was over, Little Brother Griffin looked to his Big Brother and said, “It was great meeting John Kerry, but I’m still voting for George Bush.” Here David saw that his new Little Brother was not afraid to speak his mind and this proved to be a key moment as their relationship grew stronger. Big Brother David also makes sure that he is working closely with Griffin’s mom in supporting and encouraging Griffin.

Their outings often include baseball games, theater and concerts, go-kart racing, whitewater rafting, but on top of all, they really enjoy simply spending time together. Their relationship has not come without its challenges, as Little Brother Griffin is a loyal Ohio State fan and Big Brother David is from Michigan. However, they have found some middle ground in supporting the University of Dayton’s men’s basketball team. One day, they are hoping to visit the Big House in Ann Arbor or the Horseshoe in Columbus to experience a University of Michigan vs. Ohio State football game.

Through all of their adventures these past 11 years, Big Brother David mentioned that he has seen his Little Brother grow in “his willingness to take responsibility for his actions, his ability to not accept the status quo, his learning good decision-making practices, and his talent for continuing to seek out the most appropriate course of action.” They share a mutual respect and admiration based on trust, confidence and constantly growing the friendship. The experience of being a Big Brother has brought David closer to his own family, especially his daughters, as he is gaining a new perspective of new pressures and impact the changes of technology has had on young individuals. Griffin’s mom has been very appreciative of what David has provided his son. “David has not only been a tremendous mentor to my son, but he has become an incredible friend to me and an extended member of our family.”

As a professional who travels to Washington, D.C., every week, Big Sister Christine wanted a way to connect with someone who she could guide regardless of where she was. When she signed up to be a Big Sister, she wanted someone who had a different view on the world than she did. She was matched with Little Sister Florence. Like many matches, they were nervous during their first meeting, but soon realized that they had great potential. “The first day I met her I didn’t know if I would like her, but I started to quickly,” mentioned Little Sister Florence.

Through the five years that they have been matched, they have had their ups and downs. One challenge Big Sister Christine faced was watching her Little Sister, Florence, deal with life situations that would change her life forever, such as when Florence would be placed into foster care. Big Sister Christine was steadfast through the multiple home relocations during that time, and was a consistent guiding force in her life. Christine even drove hours just to see her Little Sister for an hour. Big Sister Christine stated, “My only goal at that time was to show her that friends stay with friends when the going gets rough.”

Big Sister Christine worked to understand things that her Little Sister enjoyed doing, such as singing and swimming, and would help her practice. It was through these types of activities that Little Sister Florence started to break out of her comfort zone and explore new opportunities. They also enjoy going to the movies, going shopping, talking about hair and makeup, as well as working on schoolwork together. Through the countless hours they have spent together, they have tackled some tough conversations and their relationship has grown as a result. Christine has always created a space where they are partners, equals and they are of great value to the other. She isn’t doing anything for Florence; rather they are doing this for each other.

When Little Brother Deonte met his Big Brother Alan, he was struggling academically and was displaying negative behavior at school and at home. He would disrespect his teachers and get into confrontation with is peers. Deonte was diagnosed with ADHD and found it very difficult to maintain focus. Alan, from the beginning of the match, provided Deonte with the encouragement, guidance and consistency that he needed in his life. Their match started through a school-based program where they met once a week at school during lunch/recess period. Here they would eat lunch and play a game, do school work or practice lessons on the computer. The match grew and evolved to a community-based match. Here they would have the opportunity to do more activities and spend more time together.

As the school year begins, Big Brother Alan helps his Little Brother get ready by going shopping together for school supplies. They also enjoy bowling, golfing, roller skating, swimming, fishing and attending University of Illinois sporting events. With every activity that they participate in, Big Brother Alan ensures that he creates an opportunity for his Little to learn new skills. For example, when they go fishing, he is teaching Deonte the importance of patience and the great result that can come from it. Another example was when Deonte learned to ride four wheelers, Big Brother Alan emphasized the importance of safety.

All of these activities have helped nurture a bond that they both share. “I believe over the past five years, Deonte and I have developed a special bond where we have learned to trust each other, and can be open and honest in our conversations,” stated Big Brother Alan. This bond grew even stronger when Deonte’s 20-month old brother was killed in a hit-and-run accident. Alan knew that Deonte needed him more than ever, and he immediately went to Deonte and was there to help him sort through his emotions. Little Brother Deonte was able to cope with the loss and grew closer to his Big Brother. One day he asked Alan, “Will you be my Big Brother when I get older?” in which Alan responded, “Sure I will, if you want me to.” It was here that Alan knew that this match would result in a long-lasting friendship.

Little Sister Hope’s mom knew that her daughter needed guidance to ensure Hope would stay focused on school and have a more positive outlook on life. Hope was matched with Big Sister Brianna in 2012. Brianna wanted to find a way to give back to her community and have a direct impact on an individual’s life, instead of just donating money for a cause. Since their match started, Big Sister Brianna has worked to ensure her Little Sister that they will be keeping their relationship for a long time.

As a 13-year old, Hope had trouble understanding how to appropriately spend and save money. Given Little Sister Hope’s background, Big Sister Brianna has put an emphasis on doing “real world” outings in addition to the fun outings. Brianna mentioned that she has talked to Hope about the importance of saving money, and they have gone to the bank, written checks and balanced a check book. They have even renewed tags at the local courthouse, and discussed car insurance and basic car maintenance. “I want to show her that there is a much larger world than what she currently knows,” stated Big Sister Brianna and feels that these basic activities doing just that. To keep things fun, they like to get their nails done, grab dinner, then watch a movie. Big Sister Brianna and Little Sister Hope also enjoy bowling and riding go-carts.

Little Sister Hope has certainly grown, thanks to the support of her Big Sister. She has come to know the importance of forming positive habits as she works hard to achieve every goal that she has. One of their favorite outings involved going to an Auburn University football game. This was a huge opportunity for Big Sister Brianna to showcase what a university has to offer to her Little Sister. They went a little early to take a tour of the campus, talk about scholarships, and discuss how if she works hard and stays in school, she can go to any college she wants. Little Sister Hope has realized that she has control over her own future and all the successes to come.

Raising three sons by yourself is no easy task. After Big Brother Mark’s sons soon grew up, he found himself wanting to give back and do activities that he did with his sons when they were younger. Mark wasn’t scared or concerned about the any potential difficulties, family background or behaviors. He simply wanted to help a child who desperately needed a mentor. Big Brother Mark was matched in 2008 with his Little Brother, Sammy.

Sammy had many challenges growing up. Sammy’s father was deported from the U.S. when Sammy was just one year old. He also has severe ADHD, and was often bullied and made fun of. Little Brother Sammy’s mom knew that he needed the support of someone to go out and do male-oriented activities that she simply could not do with him. When the match started, the only male figure in Little Brother’s Sammy’s life was his grandfather, who was wheelchair bound and was limited in the activities that they could do together.

Sammy and his mother have moved four times since the match started, which Big Brother Mark states, “I feel as though I am the only stable relationship he has.” As their time progressed, they began to try more new things, have more meaningful conversations and spend more time together.

Mark has introduced his Little Brother to his family and has made Sammy and his mom feel like they are part of their big family. “Mark has opened up his home to me and my son and made us feel like we have more family than just each other,” said Sammy’s mother.

Big Brother Mark understands that there is a fine line of being a father figure to his Little Brother, but also someone he feels is on his side. “Mark has, without a doubt, been a father figure in my life and I know I can talk to him about anything a son would talk to his dad about, but also can talk to him as a friend and best friend. I think it’s the best of both worlds,” Little Brother Sammy stated.

When they first met, Little Brother Sammy had few interests or hobbies. That has now changed thanks to his Big Brother. They have enjoyed going bowling, riding go-carts, going to the movies, and even tried hunting and fishing. Something that Little Brother Sammy has grown a great interest in is old world war items like World War II memorabilia. Another activity that Little Brother Sammy really enjoys is learning how to fix things around the house, yard, and even doing some basic car maintenance such as changing the engine oil. Through these activities, Little Brother Sammy is now striving to graduate high school and hopes to go into the Army and then one day become an attorney. Little Brother Sammy is excited to say “I was a follower my whole life and now I am a proud to say I am a leader!”

When Little Sister Asia got matched with her Big Sister Ginny, Asia and her mother were considered homeless. The home they lived in was damaged beyond repair in a wind storm. This struggle affected Asia’s social-emotional health. Asia’s mother also was restricted to stay indoors due to a Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary disease. “Because of my disease, I am not able to do as much with Asia as I would like to, and this is where Ginny fits in.” Asia’s mother knew that Asia needed someone to help her through this tough time in their lives and put her in a path to success.

Prior to being matched with her new Little Sister, Big Sister Ginny was nervous about the possibility of having another Little. Ginny had just completed an 11-year match through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Illinois. She had thoughts such as “what if it doesn’t work this time? What if the new girl doesn’t like me? What if we cannot find things to do together?” All of these worries were lessened in their first meeting. They met around Asia’s 11th birthday; her mom kept the match visit a surprise as Asia had been waiting so long and did not want to disappoint. Asia was very interested in Ginny’s previous match and when she learned that it lasted as long as it did, she got excited that her new Big Sister was committed. “Asia declared that getting matched to me was the best birthday present she could ever wish for,” said Big Sister Ginny.

The match started out with trips to local parks, pizza dinners and a little bit of homework help. Big Sister Ginny wanted to learn more about her new Little Sister, so they also played games like 20 questions. Ginny worked to lay a foundation of trust, understanding and safety, which allowed Asia to bloom. Big Sister Ginny offered many resources to help advocate for the family for the recovery of items lost in the storm and for housing assistance. Through these efforts, a local sorority took note of the match relationship, providing items like clothing, school supplies, art supplies and other small tokens of encouragement throughout the year. This small act helped Ginny convey the message that people truly care about Asia’s success in life.

The support Asia received inspired them to develop new traditions every year where they help others. Every fall they help a friend prepare for a big Halloween party, cleaning and decorating and making piñatas. Near Christmas, they make dozens of homemade cookies to share, as well as see the production of A Christmas Carol. In the spring, they help out at the annual Bowl For Kids’ Sake event.

Ginny has also encouraged Asia to think holistically about her health, learning better eating habits, utilizing community assets like parks, open gyms and other activities for physical exercise, and being more aware of her social-emotional wellbeing. Little Sister Asia and Big Sister Ginny celebrated their five-year anniversary earlier this year and couldn’t be more excited for what the future has in store for them. “I think this is mostly what a sisterhood is all about: having someone to live, love and laugh with,” said Little Sister Asia.

Experiencing the loss of a loved one will turn anyone’s life upside down. Little Brother Sammy not only lost his brother, but his father became very ill. Sammy’s mom knew that he needed a positive role model during this tragic time in his life. She saw him dealing with all the stress by becoming reclusive and withdrawn. He lacked any motivation, ambition, self-confidence or direction in his life.

When Sammy first met his Big Brother, Phil, he was apprehensive and unsure about participating in the program. During their first meeting, Sammy told his new Big Brother about the loss of his older brother, and Phil responded by letting him know that he, too, lost his older brother. Sammy immediately knew that he had a bond with Phil. “We started talking and found out we had a lot in common and had an instant connection,” said Little Brother Sammy.

When Sammy first saw his new Big Brother, he thought that Phil was a little old and wouldn’t be able to keep up with him. However, Sammy soon realized that Phil could not only keep up, but he found himself trying keeping up with his Big Brother. Phil often encouraged Sammy to do things he didn’t think were possible, including singing, dancing and acting. Thanks to this encouragement, Sammy is now a member of a children’s musical theatre program and has performed in “Annie,” “Peter Pan” and “Seusical the Musical.”

Their bond was more evident when Sammy’s father passed away due to his illness a short time after their match. Phil took his Little Brother to lunch and spent the entire day together to help cope with his loss. Big Brother Phil attended the funeral, and it was there that Sammy’s mother understood the scope of how much of a difference Phil was making on her son. Sammy approached his mom and said, “You don’t have to worry about me losing my father, mom, because I have Phil.” Big Brother Phil successfully filled the empty hole that the loss of Sammy’s older brother and father left with new hope and motivation to be successful. Through their three-year match, Little Brother Sammy has evolved into a wonderful public speaker who makes eye contact, is funny, at ease around strangers, and overall has a positive attitude. Both Big Brother Phil and Little Brother Sammy agree that this match is meant to last a lifetime.

Growing up is never easy. It is especially hard when you are the second oldest of five sisters raised by a single mother. In 2009, Cyrenna (CyCy) was introduced to her new Big Sister, Brianne. Skeptical about the opportunity, CyCy often challenged her Big Sister. “I honestly believed she would leave me sooner or later, so why not sooner rather than later,” said Little Sister CyCy. Brianne soon proved that she was not like other adult figures in CyCy’s life and would be there, regardless of all of the challenges they both may face.

CyCy and her sisters were in foster care for two years. When they were reunited with their mother, Big Brothers Big Sisters was recommended so the girls would have strong mentors and trusted friends. CyCy felt that she was forced into growing up at a very young age and never had the time to be a kid. Big Sister Brianne allowed her to have those childhood moments. “Brianne brings the kid out of me that I was never able to be. I have grown as a person and no longer consider myself a person with extra baggage.”

Two years after their match, CyCy was going down a path that could have led her to dropping out of high school. She was skipping class and engaging in risky behaviors. She was spending time with peers who didn’t care about school and there was always “drama” in her life. Brianne was constantly there to support her and let her know that no matter what she did, Brianne was not going anywhere.

Brianne also held CyCy to higher standards, letting her know, as she did when they first met, that she is worthy of more in her life. Thanks to the constant support from Big Sister Brianne, CyCy held herself to a higher standard. CyCy enrolled into the Washington Youth Academy, a military-based school where students live on site for five months. She came out energized and committed to her education. She also enrolled into the Pierce County Skills Center during her senior year, where she worked toward becoming a Certified Nurse Assistant. Now, CyCy plans to attend college, something she never thought possible. “Without Brianne’s never-ending encouragement and long talks about my future, I would not be where I am today.”

The world can be a very scary place for any 10-year-old. This is especially true for someone with Asperger’s, a condition that affects the ability to socialize and communicate. Thanks to the help from his Big Brother Sean, Little Brother Miles has grown tremendously from a shy, inward child to a happy, smiling young boy with plenty to say. Many kids let their personality traits make it hard for them to try new things or understand how to deal with certain situations. Big Brother Sean identified this as a key area to work on early in their match. Little Brother Miles used to feel lonely and would get upset when faced with life changes. But with the support of his Big Brother Sean, Miles is now learning to overcome new things and new emotions.

“One of the most important things I try to help Miles with is his social skills. I want Miles to be happy with himself and share that with others,” Big Brother Sean stated. Sean has made sure to plan activities where they can bond closely, such as playing chess, as well as activities where Miles can slowly break out of his comfort zone, such as sporting events. Although their first Milwaukee Bucks game was a little rocky, due to a little too much going on for Miles, they are both looking forward to giving it another try and working on Miles’ comfort level. They have also gone to watch the Brewers play, gone sailing, and done some pumpkin carving.

Little Brother Miles’ mom has been very thankful to Big Brother Sean for providing guidance and helping her son gain his sense of security. “Sean has done a great job taking Miles out of his comfort zone and helping him try new things,” said Miles’ mom. She always wanted to have a male influence in her son’s life who was older and could help him deal with new things life was throwing at Miles. With help from his Big Brother, Miles has developed his self-confidence and is better prepared to handle big challenges and opportunities.

When Ashley was 11 years old, her world as she knew it came to an end during a phone call where her dad told her that he and her mom were getting a divorce. She took the news very hard and struggled to adjust for some time thereafter. Her mother looked to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Texas and decided to enroll Ashley in the program in hopes of finding someone who Ashley could trust and lean on through this tough time.

In the fall of 1987, Ashley was matched with her Big Sister Tammey. One of their first meetings took place at the school where Tammey worked. There, Little Sister Ashley saw how beloved Tammey was by the students and realized what an exceptional person she was. From day one, Tammey took her Little Sister under her wing and made her part of her family. They ran errands, cooked, ate dinner together, and went to the movies. They grew even closer when Ashley was the first extended family member to hold Tammey’s second son in the hospital.

When Tammey moved away for several years, they both feared that this would put a damper on their relationship; however, it did just the opposite. This move allowed them to appreciate their relationship even more. Soon afte0,r Tammey would move again and add even more distance between her and her Little Sister. This move hindered the frequency in which they saw each other, but it did not break their strong bond. Their sisterhood remains steadfast to this very day. Big Sister Tammey has been there for Little Sister Ashley by attending her wedding, providing support through tough times, and always being welcome with open arms – nearly 30 years later.

Big Brother Rusty grew up in a North Omaha neighborhood that struggled with poverty, drugs and the pressures of gang culture. When Rusty signed up to be a Big, he hoped to get a Little who was from the same neighborhood as him so he could easily relate to the local struggles. Rusty understood that when young people get advice from someone who they feel “doesn’t get it,” the advice can be dismissed quickly. In August 2010, Rusty was introduced to his new Little Brother, Ja’Roderick (JD). Rusty was ecstatic that his new Little Brother was not only from the same neighborhood but that he also attended the same schools and liked the same sports as him. “Our bonds allow him to open up to me about the specific pressures he deals with,” said Big Brother Rusty.

“It was hard at first, meeting some random dude that I didn’t care anything about. I didn’t know what to think, but I found out we had more in common than I expected,” said Little Brother JD.

Rusty and JD now enjoy movies, eating out, laser tag, attending agency activities, and visiting Omaha’s zoo and Worlds of Fun in Kansas City. They spend time at the library doing homework and visit their high school to toss a football or play some hoops. Big Brother Rusty and JD attend sporting events including the College World Series and college football games.

With high school in full swing, Rusty has encouraged JD to think about life beyond high school and explore career opportunities. In 2012, while doing a TV interview together, JD mentioned how much he was enjoying a CAD drawing class he was taking at school. A professor from the University of Nebraska College of Architecture saw the story and contacted the agency to offer JD a scholarship to that summer’s architecture camp for high school students. During the week of camp, apprehension turned to pride, and Little Brother JD couldn’t wait to show his mother and Big Brother his accomplishments from camp. Soon after, JD was able to join the HOBY Leadership Camp, where Rusty volunteers each summer as a counselor. All this success allowed JD to get a new perspective and offer his views to kids from rural communities.

Seeing how much his Big Brother has influenced his new path, JD hopes to someday volunteer. “I have thought about one day giving back to my community and the organization by sharing my story and knowledge with my own Little Brother,” said JD.

Big Brother Rusty mentioned that when he was JD’s age, he “was a person who felt limited by my circumstances. I believed that where you started limited where you could go.” JD has inspired Rusty in also reaching higher than what he thought was the ceiling for him. He recently changed his career in finance to enroll in a post-baccalaureate program to prepare for a career in medicine. When they both first met, they were looking for something. As more time passes by, they realize their bond is something they couldn’t have predicted.

It’s been five years since Big Sister Pamela and Little Sister Skyler have been matched through the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida program. Skyler comes from a family that has struggled financially and her family knew that Skyler needed a positive female to look up to. Soon after Skyler’s enrollment, her grandmother passed away, and at this point Skyler really needed someone who could shed some positive light in her life. Fortunately, Big Sister Pamela was the perfect match for Skyler.

Over the years they have shared many lifetime memories, from Skyler’s first time seeing Disney on Ice, to tennis lessons, to playing the violin and everything in-between. One of Skyler’s favorite things that she has done was when Pamela helped her receive a scholarship to a full week at the National Flight Academy at the Pensacola Naval Air Station, which has the world’s largest simulated aircraft carrier. Here, Skyler was able to map out a flight plan and then went down to their simulator to “fly” a plane. This opportunity was a life-changing experience for Skyler, where she learned leadership, critical thinking, teamwork and problem-solving skills that she will have the rest of her life.

Little Sister Skyler and Big Sister Pamela often have conversations about grades, boys, the importance of exercise and eating healthy, family and how to be a lady. During these life-changing stages, conversations and adventures, Skyler has progressed into a mature teenage woman. With Pamela’s motivation, Skyler graduated eighth grade with a 4.0 grade point average which helped her qualify for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program in her community. Here, she was provided with many challenges, including college-level courses and the ability to blend in with private school students who were also enrolled in the program. Skyler realized that the program was just not for her. Her Big Sister helped her through the transition back to her regular school while ensuring that she was still taking honors classes.

Thanks to the confidence that Big Sister Pamela has bestowed onto Little Sister Skyler, Skyler is no longer the shy person Big Sister Pamela first met. “Pamela has slowly broken me out of the shell that I used to have encaged around me. However, being matched with such an amazing person who is extremely social with people will break any person out of their shell,” said Little Sister Skyler. One of the first activities that Pamela had Skyler do was to pass out brochures at an auction and this helped push Skyler to interact with people she did not know.

Pamela has worked to stay active with her Little Sister. They are big advocates of their local Big Brothers Big Sisters office and they work on many projects together. Pamela also serves as a Board Member for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida. Through their work they have helped raised money in many ways, such as in the promotion of a coupon book through Arby’s and via an awards gala video. Their dedication supports the Big Brothers Big Sisters mission and will help more children like Skyler reach their highest potential in life.
